Development Inc. has secured the rights
to a 550 square kilometer offshore
wind site within the Hecate Strait's
Energy Field, also known as the Haida
Energy Field. The Hecate Strait separates
Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands)
and the mainland of British Columbia,
near Prince Rupert. The area has been
identified as one of the world's 10
best locations for offshore wind energy
by the World Energy Council, with
some of the strongest most consistent
winds in Canada. The NaiKun offshore
wind site can accomodate up to 1,750
megawatts of installed capacity, which
will generate 6,750 gigawatt hours
of power annually - enough to power
600,000 homes. NaiKun proposes to
develop the NaiKun Wind Farm in five
phases, with the first phase anticipated
to be a 320 MW offshore wind development.
